With boundless energy and soulful appeal, Sonia Aimy irresistibly blends afro-jazz, afrobeat, highlife, and African griot call-and-response. The Nigerian-born and Canadian-based singer-songwriter is also a gifted actress, producer, director, and committed activist. She has performed concerts with African musical legends such as Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela, and appeared on many theatre stages, including in a 14-year run with the National Theatre of Turin as the first Black Cinderella.
Through her non-profit organization African Women Acting (AWA), which she founded in Ontario in 2013, Sonia brings light to pressing social issues in addition to promoting African culture. Black History Month in 2023 saw the premiere of Sonia’s film, TRACE: Tracing African Canadian Extraordinaire, which celebrates seven influential African Canadian leaders in various disciplines. As executive producer and director, Sonia also wrote and sang the film’s title song of the same name.
In June 2024, Sonia released her long-awaited album, Light – Imole. This ten-track album is a wonderful combination of storytelling inspired by Sonia’s birthplace, Nigeria, and her global experiences. The album showcases the many styles of African music – Afrobeat, Highlife, Afropop, and Spiritual – in an authentic, extensive, beautiful, and innovative manner.
