When it comes to the dance floor, there’s more than one way to skin a cat and some artists can’t stop with just one remix. Here are two more takes showcasing the versatility of John-Christian Urich and Cornelius Mashilane.

John-Christian Urich’s 2nd Remix, “Backseat Make Out Mix,” features a clear bold baseline so undeniable that it harkens to the early 80’s and

steadily drives a deep, nu disco groove that will invite you to put your back and shoulders into it as you fuse your spirit with 113 beautiful beats per John-Christian Urich is the singer, drummer, and the primary writer/composer/producer/arranger for Tortured Soul. Cornelius Mashilane’s second offering features a sweet, earthy beat with a smattering of lush chords. It’s a minimal accompaniment that so perfectly marries the vocal it makes you feel like you have just been served a perfect home cooked meal each time you play this mix.

Cornelius Tshepo Mashilane, widely known as “Cornelius SA”, hails from Atteridgeville, a small township in the west of Pretoria, South Africa. He is a selftaught DJ and Producer who fell in love with house music during his primary school days. After signing up with Toronto-based record label DNH Records with his single EP “Falling Again” (feat. Charlie & PJ,) he cemented his place in the industry. His current work with Tortured Soul represents another significant step towards realizing his manifest destiny: success in the world of dance music and beyond.

Tortured Soul is 100% LIVE, modern, deep, soulful, house music. The band’s frontman and songwriter, John-Christian Urich, can be seen simultaneously drumming and singing with effortless mastery, while bassist, Jordan Scannella, and keyboardist, Isamu McGregor, virtuosically generate the pulsating accompaniment that has been making bodies sweat for years and continues to be what Gilles Peterson called “The future of house mu- sic.” Influenced by the classic songcraft of Prince, Heatwave and Kool & The Gang, and likened to The Roots of house music, Tortured Soul’s sound is reminiscent of neo-soul groups like Jamiroquai or Brand New Heavies, while also being deeply saturated in the contemporary freshness of house purveyors like Joey Negro, Louie Vega, Soul Clap and Disclosure.
