A meeting of Toronto’s Soul, Funk & House Music DJs and Musicians plus international Soulful House Trio Tortured Soul (hot off gigs in South Africa, Europe and New York City), this Friday July 28th at Woodbine park as part of the Beaches Jazz Festival summer programming. Footprints, United Soul, Make it Funky & NuFunk DJ crews are synonymous with Toronto’s club scene while Tush is a an up and coming live disco band hot off the heals of gigs at Toronto Jazz Festival. Tortured Soul is 100% LIVE modern, deep, soulful, house music freed from the DJ Booth. Influenced by the classic songcraft of Prince, Heatwave and Kool & The Gang, the members of Tortured Soul are three distinctive guys with three different backgrounds, united under a groove-centered rhythm. The band’s frontman and songwriter, John-Christian Urich, can be seen simultaneously drumming and singing with effortless mastery, while bassist Jordan Scannella, and keyboardist Isamu McGregor virtuosically generate the pulsating rhythm and melodic joy.
Likened to The Roots of house music, Tortured Soul’s sound is reminiscent of neo-soul groups like Jamiroquai or Brand New Heavies, while also being deeply saturated in the contemporary freshness of house purveyors like Joey Negro, Kenny Dope, Soul Clap and Disclosure.
Tortured Soul have an international following and over the course of their 10+ year career, they have played high profile shows and festivals throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, South America. They have shared stages with such top talent as: Pharrell Williams, Thievery Corporation, Beck, Perry Farrell, MMW, Brazilian Girls, and DJs : DJ Shadow, Giles Peterson, Francois K., Louis Vega, Kaskade, DJ Spinna, Paul Oakenfold, and Miguel Migs among many others.
DJ / Promoter / Producer YOGI has been a brick layer in Toronto’s Dance Music Community for the past 2 decades now. His journey started as a member of the highly respected DJ collective: Groove Institute. Their mission: to educate and entertain the people with the MUSIC that they loved. Over the years, YOGI has shared the stage with some of the industry’s finest like Tony Allen, Femi Kuti, Seun Kuti, Louie Vega, Osunlade, Colonel Abrams, Jellybean Benitez, Robert Owens, Byron Stingily, Adeva, Blaze, Jazzanova, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Tortured Soul, Black Motion … On any given night, Yogi’s dj set showcases his love for global rhythms and Solid Garage music! He has also appeared at WMC, BPM & The Tribe Tambor Boat Cruise.
Yogi also heads United Soul, an event promotions company responsible for the launch of Solid Garage (19 yrs strong), Do You Love House?, SA Deep & Brighter Days party brands. He has brought some the worlds top dance parties to Toronto: Paradise Garage Tribute, Dance Ritual, ANBAHP, Crossroads, Therapy, Tribe, Tambor, Bang The Drum & Yoruba Dance Sessions.
Footprints is Toronto’s longest running open format dance event. Now nearly 15 years strong, Foortprints has a loyal and unwavering band of followers and lovers of dance, music and community. Hosts DJ Jason Palama and & General Eclectic’ monthly party inside the backroom of the Rivoli hits every last Saturday of each month and provides an open minded, all inclusive space for Torontonias to lose themselves in a vast range of dancefloor music. Everything from Funk, Groove, Soul, Hip Hop, Tropical Beats Samba, Salsa, Forro, Reggae, Ska, Dancehall Disco, House, Downtempo, Mashups and the occasional guilty pleasure thrown in. Jason Palama also hosts the influential radio show Higher Ground on CIUT 89.5fm every Thursday 8 – 10pm and Jason Sanders is a graphic designer who’s vintage and contemporary designs are a staple of Toronto’s nightlife posters.
Disco is an attitude. Fronted by Kamilah Apong and Kaysie Quansah, Tush serves an intimate affair that travels deep into disco discourse. The sextet is currently in studio working on their debut album. Instrumentalists include veteran producers and DJ’s Mark Penner (Cyclist), James Harris (Hemingway), Jamie Kidd and Kevin Lee. DJ Quesquecest? (No Wahala DJs NYC, Make it Funky, Nufunk)
Originally from Toronto, Canada DJ Quescequest? is Jay Cleary, concert promoter, musician, DJ and avid music collector. “Quesquecest” is French for “what is that?” and throwing down “Psycho Killer” rare and exclusive big beats between sets at live events is his signature. As a DJ he’s shared the stage on diverse bills with Stephen Marley (Jamaica), Capital Cities (LA), Femi Kuti (Nigeria), Soulive (NYC), Tortured Soul (NYC/LA), The Freestylers (UK), The New Deal (CAN), Easy Star All-Stars (NYC) and many others. On top of live and DJs gigs across Canada, in NYC he’s performed at Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bowl, Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall, Mercury Lounge and Brooklyn Bridge Park’s SyFy Film Series. As a part of the No Wahala DJs Crew he hosts a monthly #Unwind party in Bedstuy which is a 7 hour dancefloor session of reggae, dancehall, hiphop, house, soca, naija and afrobeat. Also as founding member of Toronto’s the Make if Funky Crew, DJ Quesquecest? has worked with DJs Mixmaster Mike, Grandmaster Flash, Z-Trip, Bonobo, DJ Shadow, DJ NuMark, DJ Qbert, Fort Knox Five, Krafty Kuts, A.Skillz and many others.
DJ Farbsie (Make it Funky)
DJ Farbsie, founder of the Make It Funky Collective got deep into funk at Mo’ Gravy bar in London in 1996 prior to that his musical influences were formed in the live music scene traveling to over 400 shows across North America. Having collected thousands of records over the years in 2000 He first stepped up to the decks and the formative years for the Make It Funky Collective began.
In 2005 Make It Funky was born. In the years to follow Farbsie has been spreading the funk gospel and grooving dancefloors across the country. Farbsie’s vision is a concert experience whose mission is to explore the funkier side of all things breakbeat and it’s a mission he brings directly to the dance massive. You’ll get an exceptional night of music, dancing and good fun, with a focus on bringing the cutting edge of funk breaks hip hop and beat driven live music to the masses.
Farbsie working with Make It Funky partner Jay Cleary spent years developing the funk/breaks scene presenting local and top international Breaks, Rare Groove, Turntablism, Classic old school hip-hop and live touring artists to venues across Canada. Farbsie dj skills and addictive flow and track selection has allowed him to share the stage with internationally acclaimed artists like Dj Z-Trip, Afrika Bambaataa, Krafty Kuts, Freddy Fresh, Herbaliser, A.Skillz, Mat the Alien, Fort Knox Five, Dj Czech, Bassnectar, and Deekline and Wizard.
Nufunk is one of Toronto’s most recognizable live concert promotion brands, and has grown to include events and tours across Canada & The United States. Well known in the house community as the percussionist that has worked with more local and international talent than most in the business. He is well versed in world music and in many of Toronto’s music scenes. From performing to teaching, Chico presence in this Toronto has been felt for many years.

Well known supporter of the house scene worldwide, for his taste in music, being a back in the day dancer and appreciation for dance culture; has hosted more events than we have room to list. Has always aimed to bring music and art to the people.
